Town Contact Information

Welcome to Minerva, NY!

Minerva, New York, is a town rich in both history and natural beauty. It was once solely populated by its founder, Revolutionary War soldier Ebenezer West, and his five sons. Notably, Solomon Northup, author of "Twelve Years a Slave," was born there in 1808. Today, Minerva celebrates this heritage and its stunning wilderness. Half of the town is state land, offering amazing scenic hikes, lively fishing, and being a central hub for snowmobiling. Many hiking trails lead to bodies of water, with some forming chains to different ponds from the same trailhead.

Minerva Lake is home to a beautiful town beach and campground, perfect for overnight stays or sunny day trips, offering play structures, courts, and picnic areas. For a unique experience, Sporty's Iron Duke Saloon is a local favorite—part museum, part dining hotspot, and even offering free camping. Winslow Homer, the renowned 19th-century painter, spent summers in Minerva, creating many of his famous Adirondack works there. His legacy is celebrated at the Minerva Historical Society museum. Today, the area remains a draw for sportsmen, with abundant game and fish, and extensive backcountry trails for winter snowmobiling.
